Every young person has leadership potential — sometimes it just needs the right environment to grow. The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) provides that environment for young people, helping them build confidence, discover their strengths, and develop the leadership skills they’ll carry into school, work, and community life.
Whether you’re a young person looking for a challenge, a parent, guardian, carer wanting to support your child’s development, or a school or community group seeking meaningful opportunities for your students, RYLA offers an experience that makes a lasting impact.
🎓 Why RYLA Matters
RYLA is more than a leadership course — it’s a catalyst for personal growth. Participants often describe it as a turning point: the moment they realised what they could achieve and how they could contribute to the world around them.
The programme is delivered in two age‑appropriate formats:
Junior RYLA (14–17)
Senior RYLA (18–30)
It’s not about academic grades or being naturally outgoing. It’s about:
🎇 Curiosity 🎇 Growth 🎇 Stepping outside comfort zones 🎇 Meeting inspiring peers 🎇 Building skills that last a lifetime
🏞️ A Transformative Experience in Southern Wales
Across the UK — including the vibrant Southern Wales district — RYLA programmes run for three to ten days, combining hands‑on learning, teamwork, and outdoor challenges. Around 100 young people take part each year in the Brecon Beacons, where the natural landscape becomes a powerful classroom for leadership.
Last year, Rotary Abergavenny sponsored four Ukrainian young people to attend the programme at the Storey Arms — a testament to RYLA’s commitment to inclusion and opportunity. 🌍
