Abergavenny Rotary Club Sponsors Education for 8 Ugandan Orphan’s

Did you know we have an International Committee? Since 2023 we have sponsored 8 Ugandan children. This sponsorship primarily supports their education.
This is a story close to Judy Cave's heart:
"I spent five years in the early 1980s working at Kisiizi Hospital, a small hospital in southwest Uganda. During that time, my husband and I got to know a couple called Alice and John Tumusiime because Alice came to the hospital to deliver her babies.
When we left Uganda, AIDS was just beginning to take hold, and very soon there were a great many orphans being cared for by grandparents, aunties, and uncles. Alice and John took as many children into their home as they could manage, but it quickly became impossible for them to care for all those in need.
John was an Anglican minister, and his bishop helped him obtain some land to build a school and later a vocational centre. More recently, a nursery was added. Today, there are about 800 children in the primary and nursery schools. Around half of them have parents or guardians who can pay their school fees, but the other half need sponsorship. Alice and John set up the charity, the Rukungiri Orphan Partnership, in 2007, and have been working to find sponsors to keep these children in school.
At the moment, we have just over 300 children sponsored, but many of our faithful sponsors are now elderly and can no longer afford to help. That’s why I am so grateful for the wonderful support we receive from Abergavenny Rotary Club.
One of the students I sponsored, now a young man, wrote something that touched me deeply. He said:
“I want you to know that who I am today is because of you. When you supported my education at Rukungiri Modern Primary School, you may have seen it as a small step, but in my life, it was a very big turning point. It opened the way for everything I have today. You chose to help me before even knowing me and that kindness changed my life in a way I can never fully explain.”
His words meant a great deal to me.
Donations received from the churches that support us, mean that we can fund projects such as a new borehole, furniture for staff and pupils, mosquito nets, and security fencing."
