Volunteering - more beneficial than we realise

Abergavenny is full of people quietly making a difference. Last month's inspiring talk, from Jo Webb and Chris Irving of GAVO (Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations), to Abergavenny Rotary Club members, partners & guests reminded us just how powerful volunteering can be.

This inspiring talk got us thinking about how people can use their skills and qualities. That's those, we often take for granted and those hidden strengths we've yet to discover.

It also made us aware that many of us consider 'helping out' but don't think of this as volunteering.

Did you know that volunteering can also help us to:

·      Learn new skills

·      Build confidence

·      Meet new people

·      Improve mental health & wellbeing

It was an eyeopener to discover the wide range of volunteering opportunities in Abergavenny.

Jo, Community Development Officer, and Chris, Volunteering Officer & Strategic Lead, shared how GAVO, founded in 1927, connects people with meaningful roles where their skills shine. They also help local groups find and support volunteers, ensuring community projects continue to thrive.

Their message was simple but powerful: Everyone has strengths worth sharing - even the ones we don't realise we have.
