George Beale is a Rotarian and keen local historian. You may have read his articles in the Abergavenny Chronicle or found him in Abergavenny library, generously sharing his knowledge. George gave an interesting and fascinating talk to Abergavenny Rotary club members, partners and guests, " A Walk Down Memory Lane".
When asked about his talk George said:
"I have always taken a great interest in local newspapers as they make a huge contribution to our community. But sadly, once they have been read they tend to be discarded without realising that they can contribute to our local history. They contain many photos that have not been published anywhere else and this means that they can contain a means of looking back into the past.
Sadly, the Abergavenny Chronicle did not update its printing presses until 1967 to allow photos to be seen. There were exceptions, such as the Queen's visit in 1963, but when the Beatles arrived here the following month there were no photos of this equally historic occasion. But once the printing presses had been changed the Chronicle was able to show fires, floods, major road works and most importantly the people who had made huge contributions to the life and times of Abergavenny".
