Together We Save Lives: Abergavenny Rotary in Action

Updated: Apr 9

Every year on 7th April, the world marks World Health Day — a reminder that health is a shared responsibility. At Abergavenny Rotary, that belief guides everything we do. From supporting lifesaving equipment in our town to contributing to global health initiatives, we are committed to making a difference locally and internationally.

💓 World Health Day: A Partnership That Saves Lives

Abergavenny Rotary has proudly worked in partnership with Andrew Lewis — a dedicated First Responder and Defibrillator Guardian — since 2015, when the town’s community defibrillator project first began. For more than a decade, Andrew has played a vital role in ensuring that public-access defibrillators across Abergavenny are maintained, accessible, and ready to save lives 24/7.

To support this essential work, Abergavenny Rotary donated £3,570 this year, funding replacement pads, batteries, cabinets, and other equipment that keeps the network operational.

Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can increase a person’s chance of surviving cardiac arrest by 50–70%. Quick access saves lives — and our long-standing partnership with Andrew helps make that possible.

🌍 Rotary International: Improving Health Across the Globe

Abergavenny Rotary is part of a global network of 1.4 million members committed to improving health and wellbeing worldwide. Rotary International leads major health initiatives, including:

🦠 Disease Prevention & Treatment

Supporting hospitals, medical training, maternal health programmes, and emergency medical aid.

💧 Clean Water, Sanitation & Hygiene

Helping communities access safe drinking water and sanitation — essential foundations for long-term health.

💉 Global Vaccination Campaigns

From measles to polio, Rotary helps protect millions of children every year through immunisation programmes.

🧠 Mental Health Support

Rotary clubs worldwide champion mental health awareness and community support initiatives.

Our local work in Abergavenny is part of this global commitment to healthier, safer communities.

🤝 Help for Kharkiv

This year, Abergavenny Rotary donated £1,000 to support vulnerable people in Kharkiv, Ukraine — providing medical supplies and winter equipment to families facing extreme hardship.

🌱 End Polio Now: A Global Rotary Mission

Since 1985, Rotary International and its global partners have worked tirelessly to eradicate polio. Thanks to this long-term commitment, global polio cases have been reduced by 99.9% — one of the greatest public health achievements in history.

Abergavenny Rotary proudly contributes to this effort. Each October, we plant purple crocuses across the community, and in February, our signs remind everyone that the fight continues.
