Abergavenny Borough Band: Striking a Chord in the Community for Over a Century

For more than 100 years, Abergavenny Borough Band has been woven into the cultural heartbeat of the town. Generations have grown up hearing their music at local events, parades, and celebrations, and their presence continues to be a source of pride for the community. They take great pride in their commitment to inspiring new musicians — and Rotary Abergavenny is delighted to play a part in that journey.

🎺 Inspiring the Next Generation Through Music

Last October, Rotary Abergavenny supported the Band’s Brass & Beats event at Gilwern Primary School — a lively, hands‑on musical experience that welcomed children and adults of all ages. For many, it was the first time they had ever held a brass instrument. Band members were there every step of the way, offering encouragement, sharing their passion, and showing just how fun music-making can be.

It’s easy to underestimate the impact of providing essentials like venue hire, music stands, percussion instruments, and music packs. But these small pieces create a huge opportunity. They open the door for people to:

·       Build confidence

·       Discover hidden talents

·       Form new friendships

All within a safe, positive, and welcoming environment

These events don’t just teach music — they build community.

If you’ve ever thought, “I can’t read music,” you’re not alone. The Band’s Youth section is designed exactly for that. Young players receive expert tuition in brass techniques and music reading, helping them grow from complete beginners into confident performers. It’s a supportive space where enthusiasm matters far more than experience.
